You have probably heard the joyful news that our Catholic churches will open again for Masses and Sacraments this Saturday. The difficult news is that, during this first phase of re-opening, the bishop is only allowing 100 people onto the property at one time. That means that once 100 persons are in church, the doors will be closed and no one else will be allowed in. Also, if we have Mass in the church, we are not allowed to have Mass in the hall or outside at the same time.
This is very difficult news, but at least the door has started to open.
How will we decide who gets into church. Well, the priest and the ministers will have to be allowed in so we can have Mass. Then, after that, the first persons to arrive will be allowed to enter.
How can we do this with dignity and respect, so it doesn’t look like a sale at Target … and Catholics don’t rush past each other to be first — which is the exact opposite of how Jesus told us we are to act?
I am asking everyone over 65 … to not come to Mass. I am asking everyone who has been a good practicing Catholic … to not come to Mass. When a family doesn’t have enough food for everyone, the children and the weak get fed first … and the strong ones wait till later. If you are strong in your faith, please don’t come to Mass for the next several weeks. Let the weak come, the ones who need God most.
To show solidarity, next Sunday I am not going to celebrate Mass. I am going to attend Mass on the computer, the same way most of you have been attending Mass. I will not receive communion next Sunday, I will make a spiritual communion, just like all of you have too. It will be difficult.
Finally, some good news. For those Catholics longing to go to confession and receive communion — you can do it … if you are willing to make a sacrifice. Next Sunday, at 11:50 pm, 10 minutes before midnight, we will open the church and keep it open till 3 am. All the priests will be there. You will be able to go to the sacrament of confession if you like … but very briefly and without stories … and then go to the front … where Holy Communion will be distributed every 15 minutes. We’ll all need to get into church quickly, go to sacraments quickly, and leave quickly — to make room for everyone and observe social distance. We’ll all need to wear masks. But the opportunity is there for you.
These strict rules for Mass attendance will remain in place at least till July, when we will hear again. Let’s all try to honor God by being patient with ourselves, patient with each other, and patient with the crosses we have been given.

Probablemente ya escucharon la alegre noticia de que nuestras Iglesias Católicas abrirán nuevamente para las Misas y Sacramentos este Sábado. La noticia difícil es que, durante esta primera fase de reapertura, el Obispo solo permite que 100 personas ingresen a la Iglesia a la vez.
