Priest Celebrating Mass

First Sunday of Lent – March 9, 2025

Gospel: Mark 1:12-15

Gospel Summary:

Immediately after His baptism, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where He remains for forty days, tempted by Satan. He is among the wild beasts, yet angels minister to Him. After this time of trial, Jesus begins His public ministry in Galilee, proclaiming: “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”

Reflection:

The forty days that Jesus spends in the desert mirror the forty days of Lent—a time of prayer, fasting, and spiritual battle. Jesus shows us that temptation is real, but He also shows us how to respond: by relying on God’s strength, not our own.

As we begin Lent, we are invited to enter our own “desert”—to step away from distractions and reflect on where we need conversion. Jesus’ words, "Repent and believe in the Gospel," are not just for those hearing Him in Galilee; they are for us today. Where in our lives do we need to turn back to God? What temptations do we need to overcome?

This season is a gift—an opportunity to renew our hearts, deepen our faith, and prepare for Easter. May we walk with Christ in the wilderness, trusting that, like Him, we are never alone.
