ONLINE LEARNING INSTRUCTIONS – LESSON #1
Step 1: Watch the video

Step 2: Answer the small group questions.

– What is one thing that stood out to you in the video?
– Who are some of your role models, heroes?
– What is it about them that you want to imitate?
– Do you ever feel pressure to be a certain way, or achieve a certain goal?
– Where do the pressures come from?
– How does it make you feel that Jesus did not ask for the best of the best to become his disciples, he just asked ordinary people?
– Finally, is there anything you need prayer for?

Step 3: Discuss the small group questions with your confirmation teacher by sending them an email.

Step 2:  Answer the small group questions:

  1. What is one thing that stood out to you?
  2. How would you define love?  What does that look like in your life?
  3. What is your reaction when you hear the words, “God loves you”?
  4. Nick shared this quote from Pope Benedict: “Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or lofty idea, but rather the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction.”  Have you ever had an experience of that sort of encounter? 
  5. What does it mean when he quoted the Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, describing God as good, but not safe?  How does that sit with you?
  6. Is there anything you need prayer for this week?

Step 2:  Answer the small group questions:

  1. What is one things that stood out to you?
  2. Chika ended with a quote from St. Pope John Paul II.  It began, “it is Jesus whom you seek when you dream of happiness.”  What Makes you happy?
  3. Why might Jesus fulfill our desire to be happy?  Why might it be difficult to believe that Jesus is really what we seek?
  4. Chika shared a quote,  “Jesus suffered unto death not that we might not suffer, but that our suffering might be like his.”  How can our suffering be like Jesus?
  5. Saint Paul calls all things “Trash” compared to what he has gained in Christ.  What is something you cherish very much?  Why does St. Paul call even the items we love “Garbage”?  If you don’t know or understand this question, ask you teacher.
  6. Is there anything you need prayer for this week?

Step 2:  Answer the small group questions:

  1. What stood out to you in the video?
  2. Chika made a reference saying that we are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with.  Who are the people you spend the most time with?  Do you notice the similarities between you and those 5 people?
  3. Chika talks about how connected we are via our phones, the internet, etc., but nearly half of Americans describe themselves as lonely.  Why do you think this is?  Who in your life knows you best?
  4. Chika described 3 types of friends; friends of utility, friends of pleasure, and friends of virtue.  Friends of virtue are the types of people who call us to be great.  What are some qualities of a friend of virtue?  Do you have friends of virtue? 
  5. Why do you think friends of virtue are necessary when it comes to faith? 
  6. Is there anything you need prayer for this week?
